You have probably noticed the IP ratings that relate to smartphones and smartwatches. But you might not be sure about what those IP ratings really mean. This is what our guide is for, to give you the answers you need, and connect you with some of the most waterproof and dust resistant handsets on the market.
IP stands simply for "Ingress Protection". In other words, "how effective is the device's protection against dust and water."
IP ratings are expressed as two digits, with the first digit representing protection against dust, and the second pertaining to waterproofing. No phone is ever 100 percent protected, but if a device has an IP rating of IP55, this means that there is some protection against dust and against “water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction.” However, the device must still be protected by the user.
A smartphone with a rating of 7 or higher is considered to be a waterproof smartphone. With this in mind, we have compiled a list of four good phones for water and dust resistance (phones which have are rated IP67) and six phones which are the best of the best, (IP68).
Take a look and find the perfect waterproof phone.
Google Pixel 2
When Google launched their latest Pixel smartphone into the market in October 2017, they did a great job. This sturdy piece of tech secures a great IP rating of IP67.
The tech event of 2017 was the release of the iPhone 8. Apple fans who are sick of wrecking their devices with a splash of water will be pleased by this IP67 rated handset.
The iPhone 8 is impressive in the water, but it is really no improvement on its predecessor, the iPhone 7, in this department.
HTC Desire Eye
Longtime Android champions, HTC have done very well here with the Desire Eye, which is water and dust resistant enough to keep even the most accident-prone users happy.
Samsung Galaxy S8
Samsung's Galaxy S8 smartphone is arguably the iPhone's biggest competitor in the market, and the Korean manufacturers have scored a significant win here with their iP68 rated handset.
Samsung Galaxy S7
But serious water and dust resistance is nothing new from Samsung. The S7 also scored an impressive IP68.
Caterpillar might not be renowned for smartphones, but they are famous for heavy duty equipment. So it is no surprise that their CAT S60 phone scores an IP68 rating.
Sony Xperia XZ
Sony has proved adept at creating user friendly but highly dust and water resistant smartphones. The Xperia XZ scores a rating of IP68.
Sony Xperia Z5 Series
Continuing Sony's impressive run of robust, durable handsets, the Z5 Series all receive IP68 ratings.
Sony Xperia M4 Aqua
The M4 Aqua has been on the market for several years now, but is still one of the most water and dust resistant smartphones available on the market.
Don't get caught out on your next smartphone purchase. Manufacturers have the technology required to make their phones resistant to water and dust, so make sure you look for those all important IP ratings.
